Shifting World's MAP and Tectonic Plates

Would like to share with you some interesting facts about how Tectonic plates shifting affects the Globe and how does it occur.

Before I proceed I will like to ask you : Do you know what is Pangaea, Gondwana or Laurasia OR Tectonic Plates? If you already know please stop reading here and if you don’t know and interested in knowing please proceed further 😊

Our Earth more than 600+ million years ago was one land mass which further started separating over a period of era’s to now what we are. It is also called Continental Drift.

Below picture will give you a clear vision how it looked and how it gradually changed to what we are now.

Many of you must already be knowing why, but let me take you through how it changes and what was the reasons behind this, and some mythical assumptions as well which was in between this era’s as we didn’t have much facts at hand to prove how we share common species between countries.

- Panguea also spelled as Pangaea existed around 550+ Million years ago

- Then it ended up splitting into Laurasia and Gondwana. Making Gondwana as the super continent which ended with Jurassic world around 180 million years. Gondwana covered 2/3 of the total landmass on the earth becoming World’s largest landmass. There were few landmasses which separated -they were Baltica, Laurentia and Siberia.

- And now you can see how the modern world with 7 continents.

Do you know how we changed from Pangaea to Laurasia and Gondwana? Before we touch base that part here are some Myths

First I will take you through some myth that is prevailing in India. Indian Tamilian’s believed that there was a landmass which was an extension till Australia including Sri Lanka and also sharing same sea with South Africa. It was called Kumari Kandam which looked like this in the picture, this submerged in the ocean due to Natural Catastrophe.

Kumari Kandam was later called as Lemuria by English geologist Philip Sclater in 1864.

Although there are not major facts supporting this, but some Geologist claims they found some historical evidences eg:. Same species on both side of the oceans near Africa, Australia and India but they are not sufficient to prove it is the fact but definitely with present discovery can say yes there are same species but it is not because of Kumari Kandam but Tectonic Plates shifting.

As per Tamilian mythology Kumari Kandam existed around 15000+ million years ago, even before Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Similarly there is a Myth that Atlantics continent also submerged in the Ocean and there are few more. (Do read it online if you interested to know about this. Sharing the link below in references.

What is Tectonic Plates and how are we divided and why shifting?

- Globe is divided into 15 Tectonic Plates and there are 7 Major tectonic Plates as in the picture.
- This plates shift every year by 1 cm and that’s how it is drifting apart, and millions of year later we see a different globe.
- Each tectonic plates consists of landmass as well as Oceans.

- When the temperature increases volcano erupts. They erupt where 2 plates are joining. Sometimes it overlaps and sometimes it separates further. Below picture will give you good idea how it happens.
- Since India doesn’t fall in between the lines of the plates we experience less earthquakes, however countries like Manila, Singapore falls in between plates they experience more of these.
